Little Details on your Wedding Day

I'm a sucker for the little things. Over the years the number of *important* nik-naks i've gathered to sit on my shelves to help me remember special times are too many to count. I had to have a massive cull both when I got married and when we bought our second house which was a tough day on both occassions! Some are too precious to throw away like the first bracelet my best friend bought me, or a beautiful shell I found on a family holiday once, so they sit in my memory box for my daughters to look through when they're older and to get a glimpse into my life before they were born. So, I feel that when it comes to my couples getting married, one of the best ways I can serve my brides and grooms with helping them remember their wedding day, in the best, most beautiful way possible is to ask for their collection of small details because every little part makes up the big picture.

If you're thinking about what small details make up your wedding day, I thought i'd just write out a list to help you consider what might be important to you.

Perfume - Because remembering the way you smelt on your wedding day is special. Smell is one of the most important senses. It has the power to bring you back to specific moments in time. In addition to being the sense most closely linked to memory, smell is also highly emotive. It can create feelings of love, attraction, elation and can become very nostalgic. So give your perfume bottle to your photographer so they can document it, that way you'll never forget the scent which accompanied you down the isle to meet the love of your life.

Engagement & Wedding Rings - Because they are the pieces of jewellery that stand as a tangible reminder of the powerful promises you make to your spouse. They sit on your hands daily to remind you to love them through better or worse, through sickness and health, through the good days and the bad days. They are integral to the small details of not only your wedding day but your marriage as well. I had a friend who tragically lost her engagement ring and as time passes it's harder for her to remember what it was like in all of it's beautiful detail. So hand those beauties over to your photographer as well. Plus, a bit of sparkle never hurt anyone in a photograph either, did it!

Jewellery, Hair Accessories, Veil & Heirlooms - Because many of my brides are gifted their earrings by their soon to be husband, or their bracelet was their mothers when she got married or her garter belonged to her grandmother. There is so much of the history and love from your family wrapped up in the way you look on your wedding day and it's so lovely to document the items that are/will become invaluable to you. Sentimental treasures that you can pass down to your children and grandchildren for generations to come.

Flowers - Because the flowers you choose build up the over all aesthetic of your wedding day. They adorn the lapel of your husband, they accompany you down the isle, they decorate your venue and they are the backdrop to your tables where your loved ones enjoy celebrating your love. They're also incredibly gorgeous. So if you'd like to remember the smells and colours of the flowers you chose in your bouquet or button holes then make sure you have them or parts of them available to your photographer for a short while.

Wedding Stationary - Because the save the date and your invitations are the first impressions of your wedding that your guests receive. I ask my bride and groom to either send me, or save for me, a set of all of the wedding stationary they had made for their wedding. It's the first tangible mark of the journey you have made in planning your wedding and thinking about your life together as husband and wife. They often reflect who you are as a couple and I love that about wedding stationary.

Shoes - Because they are the shoes you walk you through your wedding day. They nervously walk with you down the isle to your love, they help you stand whilst you make everlasting promises, they're there as you laugh with your best friends and they twirl and tap as you dance the night away celebrating. They're a part of your wedding look and they're you.

I hope you found this helpful! If you have any details planned for your wedding which i haven't covered here, let me know - i'd love to hear about the unique details that make you, you!
